Walking through central Italy: Le Marche

7 days / 6 nights walking tour

 

A true experience journey, an amazing walking tour exploring ancient villages, tasting delicious local specialties and admiring the beautiful landscape with vineyards, cultivated countryside and especially the beautiful National Park of Monti Sibillini. Your walking tour starts in Ascoli Piceno, with its famous square Piazza del Popolo, known as the "Living Room of Italy" and heart of the historic centre of Ascoli Piceno and its best open-air monument. Then you will walk in the surroundings of Ascoli Piceno in the woods passing the hermitage San Marco, situated very close to Mount Sibillini National Park. Your walking tour will lead you to Offida, an important wine centre and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, well known for hand-made lace. This journey will give you also the opportunity to relax on day 4 or 5, or to explore the Mount Sibillini National park through its numerous walking trails. Pleasure and adventure feature this tour: you will taste excellent food and wine while enjoying one of the best landscapes in Italy.

Program

 

Day 1

Arrival in Ascoli Piceno

Individual arrival in your hotel in Ascoli Piceno. According to your arrival time, you will have time to explore the city, with its beautiful historic centre and squares, especially Piazza del Popolo, known as the "living room of Italy". Welcome dinner with local dishes in a restaurant in the historic centre and overnight stay.

 

Day 2

Ascoli Piceno-Castel Trosino-Ascoli Piceno (9 km / 6 miles; differences of level + 532m - 268m

After breakfast, you meet one of our local representatives. You have a 25 minute transfer to the starting point of you walk, on Colle San Marco. During this walk you have beautiful views of the surrounding hilly landscape. From Piagge you walk on gravel roads and hiking trails to the hermitage 'Eremo di San Marco'. You continue to Colle San Marco. Part of the route is along the historic 'Sentiero della memoria' hiking trail where partisans hided in the woods and created ambushes. Finally you will pass the Mario Pace mountain hut at an altitude of 905m and after it you descend to the starting point of the hike. Accommodation with breakfast and packed lunch. Dinner of your own choice.

 

Day 3

Ring Walk from Ascoli Piceno (11 + 6 km-optional / 6,8 miles + 3,7 miles-optional; + 570m; starting point 530m- highest point 1098m)

Today you walk towards the Northern side of Ascoli, direction Mount Ascensione. You have a transfer by car to Porchiano, where you will start your walk. The driver will leave you at 530 m. and then you will walk uphill along the ridge of the mountain. The walk is beautiful, through woodland and at the end you will reach some meadows, right before the top of the mountain. Once you reach the cross, Rupe di Santa Polisia, you will be at the height of 1098 m and will enjoy a wonderful view over the valley. There is an alternative path if you don't want to walk all the way uphill: in this case you will reach the height of 705 m.
On your way back downhill, you will pass an organic winery, where you can stop, relax and taste excellent local wines and food. From the winery, you can choose to walk back or to be picked up by a driver. From the winery there are other 6 km to walk downhill. 
Overnight stay with breakfast, lunch package & wine-tasting. Dinner at your own choice.  

 

Day 4

Offida and Sibillini Mountains (17 Km / 10,5 miles)

After breakfast, you will have a transfer to the starting point of your walk, the lovely town of Offida. Then you start walking first through Offida, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. There is the Piazza del Popolo, the main triangular piazza dominated by the beautiful town hall, a fine example of the 15th century civic architecture in the Marche region then the theatre Serpente Aureo: a beautiful 18th century theatre and the church of Santa Maria della Rocca. After Offida you will be brought or go by own car to the winery. Here the owner will give you routes you can walk through the vineyards and the terrain of the winery. You have a lunch with wine tasting in the winery!  At the end of the walk and lunch,you have a transfer (or go by own car) to your Agriturismo in the Mount Sibillini National Park. The place is immersed in the park and has a swimming-pool, perfect to relax and to organize beautiful excursions. 

 

Day 5-6

The Sibillini National Park  

These days are dedicated to the Sibilini National Park. There are many trails to discover, but of course you can also just relax in the pool of your Holiday Farm.

You can choose from more walks:

Walking route n. 1 Pilato Lake (medium difficulty, about 8 km, + 940m -940m, starting point 1000m, end-point, 1940m; walking time about 5 hours)

From the Agriturismo Antico Mulino you have a transfer or you go with your own car to the starting point of the walk in Foce. The lake of Pilato is a water basin on the Monte Vettore, in the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains. The lake is also called "the lake with glasses" because of the shape in the periods of a higher water level. The lake is located in the Marche, but less than a kilometre from the border with Umbria. It is enclosed in a narrow glacial valley north of the main peak of the massif. It is the only natural lake in the Marche region and one of the few glacial lakes in the Apennines.  
In case of snow, one of the other
walking trails can be walked or an alternative will be given.

Walking route n. 2 Gola Infernaccio and the hermitage San leonardo (easy, about 9,5 km, + 250m -250m, starting point hiking 900m-highest point 1150m, walking time 3 hours)

The Gola Infernaccio is an impressive natural gorge formed by the river Tenna. A climb through the woods will bring you to the hermitage.

Walking route 3: Castelluccio di Norcia (easy, about 8 km, + 50 m -50 m, starting point 1300m hight-highest point 1350m, walking time 3 hours) 

Castelluccio is located on the Pian Grande high plateau. This plateau is known for its lentil cultivation, when they bloom, the plains are beautifully coloured. Unfortunately Castelluccio suffered a lot of damage during the last earthquake in 2016.  

Hiking route n.4 Monte Fortino-Monte Sant'Angelo (average; approx. 9 km; + 423m - 425m; starting point walk 311m-highest point 743m)
A nice walk through the woods on the border between Marche and Umbria. You pass the small restored Benedictine abbey Michel Sant'Arcangelo and from here there is a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

 

Day 7

End of tour after breakfast

After breakfast you have a transfer to the station or you leave by own car.
