NORDIC
WALKING IN UMBRIA
Nordic
Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world, because it
is highly effective, affordable and above all FUN. It is an enhancement
of walking, a total body workout, in which poles are used to work the
upper body as well as the lower body and to propel the walker along.
Nordic Walking is perfect for those who would like to improve their
fitness level or keep in shape. It is a sport for young and old,
athletic or not.
This
Nordic Walking holiday is ideal for people who love sport and nature. It
offers a mixture of Nordic Walking techniques, relaxed walking, culture
and wellbeing in beautiful surroundings. You will stay for 3 nights in a
quality 3 star hotel on the slopes of Mount Subasio, just 900 metres
from the medieval centre of Assisi. The hotel has a centre for health
and wellbeing with a Finnish sauna, tropical showers, hydromassage tub,
calidarium, Kneipp spa treatment for veins and a Turkish steam bath.

Independent
arrival in Assisi
Its
quiet location and the marvellous view over the valley makes
your hotel (3 stars) the perfect base for a stay in Assisi. From
the hotel you can easily reach the medieval centre of Assisi on
foot (900m), but there is also a bus stop near the hotel.
At
the end of the afternoon, over a welcoming drink, you will meet
your qualified ANWI instructor, who will begin to explain a
little about Nordic Walking and its techniques.
In
the evening you will enjoy a typical Umbrian dinner in the
restaurant of the hotel.

Nordic Walking, Assisi
and Welbeing
After breakfast you will head into the shady woods of
the national park of Mount Subasio. Following a warm-up you will
have your first lesson, lasting about 2 hours, during which you
will become familiar with the initial Nordic Walking techniques.
In the afternoon you are free to visit Assisi. You may
choose to go on a self-guided walking tour around the monuments
of the town. The route instructions for this are provided on
your day of arrival. The monuments of Assisi are mostly connected with the
lives of the saints Francis and Clare, who were born in Assisi.
From the hotel your walk goes up to the Porta Cappuccini town
gate (470m a.s.l.). From here you will walk through a tangle of
little alleys and medieval squares. You will pass the remains of
an amphitheatre, the medieval castle (506m a.s.l.), the basilica
of St. Francis, the temple of Minerva, the church ‘Chiesa
Nuova’ and the basilica of St. Clare, finally walking down to
the monastery of St. Damiano (310m a.s.l.).
At the end of the afternoon you will be offered the
‘Castae Acquae’ treatment in the spa centre of the hotel: welcome massage, Kneipp spa treatment
for veins, finnish sauna, cold shower, hydromassage tub with
colour therapy, calidarium with green apple wrap, tropical
shower, relaxation with herbal teas, music therapy and colour
therapy.
In the evening you’re free to dine in one of the many
restaurants in Assisi.

Nordic Walking, Spello
and enogastronomy
After breakfast you will set off on a walk of about 3
hours to Spello, accompanied by your instructor. During this
walk you will study the
techniques of Nordic Walking in more depth. The route passes
through olive groves and contours around the slopes of Mount
Subasio without much uphill or downhill walking. You will have
lovely views over the valley known as the ‘Valle Umbra’.
Spello
is built on the slopes of Mount Subasio.
This little town has Roman origins, as we are reminded by
several features including the porta Venere and porta Consolare
town gates and the remains of a Roman theatre outside the town
walls. Don’t forget to admire the colourful fresco’s by
Pinturicchio in the church S.Maria Maggiore.
Walking time: 3 hours (about
12 km)
You
will have lunch in Spello, in a very special place; a wine bar
where you will taste excellent Umbrian wines combined with
tasters such as different bruschette (toasted bread with
toppings), cheeses, cured ham and salami. After lunch you will
have time to explore Spello on your own and at the end of the
afternoon transport will be provided to take you back to your
hotel in Assisi.
